Glimpses of social activity models across India.
Education
education Single teacher schools
One of the main objectives of Vanavasi Kalyan (VK) is to see that every Vanavasi child gets at least primary education.

Most of Vanavasi areas do not have Government or private schools. Due to the difficult terrain and lack of basic living conditions, even if the government schools are there, the appointed teachers are not willing to serve in many of these schools.

VK is filling this gap and educating the children through the single teacher schools.

Dedicated men and women volunteers of VK staying in the remote Vanavasi areas convey the importance of education to the parents and persuade them to send their kids to schools. These volunteers, though deprived of all the modern facilities, living in thatched huts and getting exposed to the wilderness of nature, are dedicating themselves to this social cause of education. While living with the Vanavasis these volunteers earn the trust of Vanavasi people and become one among them. These schools have become a part and parcel of Vanavasi life.

VKK’s (Vanavasi Kalyan, Karnataka) free hostel for girls in Dandeli, and boy’s hostels in Ambikanagar, Chipgeri, Kumta in Karwar and Mangala near Bandipur are promoting education with core values in life.   Ku. They are the first in their community to complete SSLC and join college for further study. Today, they are the symbols of pride and confidence of their parents and Vanavasi community in the area. The first boys hostel for Siddis was started in Chipgeri of Karwar district in 1988. Students from boy’s hostel, after graduation have also taken up jobs in automobile industry, dairy and Bank.

In these centers education is given in the evening times to those who have dropped out of school and who could not attend formal education due to poverty and lack of schools nearby. Further tuition is given to the regular students through volunteers and seva varithis. The education here starts from alphabets and ends with making the students appear for the tests conducted by the govt., so that they can continue with further study. Drop outs are persuaded and many have started continuing formal education thru VKK support. There are 46 such centers.

balwadiBalwadis for kids– Nourish the child to flourish
This is a pre school facility for the Vanavasi kids aged 3 to 6 years. These balwadis are located in the remotest areas of the forest and are conducted by the full time dedicated women volunteers, who stay there in thatched huts built by the tribals. Picture and object oriented knowledge is given up to 4 years old kids and alphabets are taught to 5 years old kids. Dances, Songs, vachanas and Sanskrit Slokas are taught here, in addition to the games during the three hours duration. These woman volunteers visit the houses of the Vanavasis during their spare time and try to create awareness among the people about health, education and economy. They become an integral part of the tribal life. Overall developments, like roads, electricity, small bridges, govt. schools and ashraya houses have come up due to the efforts of these volunteers through Government schemes. There are over 10 kendras, covering Dharwad, Chamrajnagar, Haliyal, Yellapur, Mundgod, Ankola, Kumta and Bhatkal taluqs. Lot more needs to be done.

Health Care
medical

Most of the Vanavasi areas are out side the reach of doctors, nursing homes or hospitals.  They have their traditional treatments but may not be effective in critical cases.

One can come across hundreds of people who are not aware of their illness . VKK is putting its efforts to create an awareness among them about the health care facilities available today.
It collects and distributes medicines through the volunteers for the common ailments. Health care camps are arranged at remote places through qualified doctors. The patients are advised to consult specialized doctors if needed and VKK arranges the necessary funds and support through public donors.
The volunteers are also creating awareness against liquor and effectively fighting the liquor lobby in some tribal areas.

Sports centers and Sports meet – Spot –Train - Promote
The main objective is to identify, train and promote the potential sports talent among the Tribals. VKK conducts sports meets in different tribal areas, to identify and encourage sports. Once in 4 years, Vanavasi Kreeda Mahostsava, Government of India sponsored program, is conducted by Vanavasi Kalyan on all India basis. Young Vanavasi athletes from all over the country participate in this annual event. Selection is made through local sports centers and local sports meets. Officials of All India Olympic Association, National level sports organizations and Services participate in the meet as observers.

Every year dozens of athletes are selected for formal coaching in the National Sports Promotion Institutions. Further, these centers are helpful in keeping the tribal youths fit. The Olympian archer, Limba Ram is one of such talents from Vanavasi Hostel at Rajastan and was selected by SAI (Sports Authority of India) in one of these meets. Sri Limba Ram, represented India in three Olympics. At Barcelona Olympics, he missed the medal by one point in the 70-meter segment. He equaled the world record in the Beijing Asian Championship in 1992 in 30 meters event, to bag a gold medal. Many more Limba Rams are waiting to be spotted.  First All India Meet was held in Indore and was inaugurated by Flying Sikh Milka Singh. There are four sports centers in Chamarajnagar District.
